KUDU - Stack like you've never stacked before

KUDU - Stack like you've never stacked before

The KUDU is named after the Greater Kudu, a massive antelope native to Africa. The massive part is probably the only resemblance to this pedal, not in size but in sound. The name called out to us because it's a beautiful creature and one I was lucky enough to see while I spent some time delivering medical aid in the Maasai Mara and Northern Kenya.

While I design and build pedals as a profession, it all started as a hobby, I just love pedals and I still do to this day. And Dan (Coggins) knows this, so back in 2024 he presented me with my Christmas present which was a modified Distortion+ which was very cool. The mods he did enabled it to sound good played into all amps rather than just a select few, a great gain stacking tool. And this got the grey matter turning, we could and should, do something with this, why gatekeep such a cool concept. And so, the work began to design a pedal that rather than coming at in from a certain sound perspective, to come at it from a stacking, enhancing, tone-supplementing perspective. While the initial gift took inspiration from the Distortion+, the Kudu ended up in a different place with a heavily modified EQ and tone stack as well as adding multiple clipping modes and extra controls.

Georgia has been onto me for a little while to release a bit of a "back to basics" pedal. We haven't done a simple, less than four controls and one foot switch pedal for a little while, and I'm so pleased she pushed me to get this circuit finished because I absolutely love the result. It sounds fantastic on its own but where it shines is its stacking ability. It’s one of those “more better” pedals, it just hugely enhances your tone and is so much fun, we believe it’s the tonal equivalent of pure Umami, aka MSG for your pedalboard!! and I really hope you enjoy it.

The Kudu, and Aerogel are the latest Thorpy additions to my collection and have not dissapointed!

The Kudu is one of those pedals that you just don’t ever want to turn off. It has a lot of volume on tap, but also a lot of headroom for placing the Aerogel, or fuzzes in front of.

Easy tone nirvana settings: set amp to edge of breakup>set all Kudu knobs to 2 o’clock>set clipping to taste.

Well, I have no more room on my pedalboard!! Well, I will see, I already have the two peacekeepers, the bunker, the fallout cloud, the Dane, the warthog and the scarlet tuning so… but we’ll, if I hear it I will buy it?

This and the Aerogel TS in one box would be a solid dual drive.

Super curious to hear this + Field Marshal, I guess I’ll find out soon enough…
